die seelen des acheron, by adolf hirémy-hirschl (1898)
“They are all in a state of extreme agitation; only a few children and a couple petrified by despair do not share in the general frenzy. The figures are crowned with roses and daffodills and have the dishevelled look of bacchantes in ecstasy…There is an aesthetic of horror as well as an aesthetic of hedonism.”

The Portrait of Madame X - John Singer Sargent - 1884
A portrait of American expat, socialite, and notable Parisienne, “Madame X” is actually Virginie Amélie Avegno Gautreau who Sargent supposedly chased down in a winter-long game of cat and mouse to coerce her into posing. The image’s erotic suggestion is of a distinctly upper-class sort: unnaturally pale skin, cinched waist, severity of profile and an emphasis on aristocratic bone structure all imply a distant sexuality “under the professional control of the sitter”, rather than offered for the viewer’s delectation. The work caused scandal and outrage when exhibited at the 1884 Salon and Sargent was quickly asked to withdraw the piece, leaving both him and Gautreau humiliated and in poor social standing.
